GREEN BAY (NBC 26) – Big Brothers Big Sisters Northeast Wisconsin has been recognized as the recipient of the 2020 Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Quality Award.
The BBBSA Nationwide Leadership Council selected agencies for their excellence in the One-on-One Youth Mentoring Program.
Founded over 100 years ago, Big Brothers Big Sisters was born out of the need to offer an alternative path to young people facing the juvenile justice system. The program is based on in-person connections, but social distancing due to the pandemic has prompted agencies to find innovative ways for volunteer mentors (âBigsâ) to stay in touch with their mentees (âLittlesâ).
âWe support the kids, we support the ‘Bigs’ and give them the connections they can hope for,â said Katie Hess, Executive Director of BBBSNEW. “And that’s our job, it’s our responsibility to the community and we take it very seriously. And receiving an honor like this from the national office just proves that we can do great things when we work together.”
BBBSNEW served 520 youth with the Bigs last year. Staff provided support and coaching using a virtual model; they also found ways for adults, children and their families to stay connected through creative virtual activities that included scavenger hunts, Zumba classes, cookies, and art classes.
âI am honored and grateful to receive this recognition because it took a lot of effort, a lot of work and it shows that the impact we have on the community is powerful and important,â said Hess.
BBBSNEW will be officially recognized as the winner of the 2020 Quality Award at the 2021 âBigger Togetherâ virtual national conference to be held from June 28 to July 1.
